This never-before-seen Dietrich Varez print offers a nostalgic glimpse into old Honolulu and the rich history of Kewalo Harbor, home to some of the most abundant fishing in Hawai’i where sampans – traditional wooden fishing vessels – filled the waters in the 19th century, and a bustling fish market lined the docks. These vessels were often named with the suffix “Maru” (meaning “circle” in Japanese), symbolizing completeness and the promise of a plentiful catch. Dietrich takes us on the fisherman’s journey from aboard the sampan sailing in the harbor, to the thrill of reeling in the catch, and finally selling the prized Ahi at the market in this piece of wearable art.
